An (Edible) Ode to Spring

Spring is in the air, and here in the shop this means carrot cake, challah braids, and all the spring-flavoured goodies - think lavender, lemon, milk chocolate, and honey. 

Our April Bundt of the Month, available every Friday and Saturday, is also part of our Easter menu. This carrot cake is a family favourite recipe with lemon, apples, and pecans, topped with cream cheese frosting.

We are celebrating maple syrup season with our Pie of the Month - a creamy, rich maple custard pie in our flaky all-butter crust and topped with large flakes of fleur de sel from Vancouver Island Salt. We love this pie with unsweetened whipped cream or crème fraîche.

In the vein of honouring the golden elixir, we are featuring our maple oat sandwich loaf, available for Easter preorder, and on Saturdays in April. This loaf is 20% red fife flour, with added soaked oats and butter that make this loaf super soft, some maple syrup for a touch of sweetness, and a little bit of cinnamon. A treat for breakfast toast with lots of salted butter.

The star of the Easter bread lineup is always the challah. This egg-enriched, honey-sweetened sourdough is braided and brushed, primped and preened, to be the well-deserved centrepiece of your brunch table. Similar to brioche, challah is rich but light, wonderful with a slick of jam or as a vehicle for your favourite egg sandwich.

An Easter prerequisite is the hot cross bun, dotted with raisins and candied citrus, with warm spices and a sticky glaze. These always go fast!

As always, Fifth Chute has a cookie box for the holiday. We curated a selection of cookies and squares with flavours inspired by the spring season and the Easter holiday: iced sugar cookies in bunny and egg shapes; lavender honey shortbread; our famous gluten-friendly espresso brownies, topped with crushed Mini Eggs; Bakewell bars with a shortbread crust, Beth’s Kitchen berry jam, and an almond frangipane topping; and our classic salted chocolate chip cookies.

Preorders for Easter baking are now live for all of these goodies, for pickup on Friday April 15 or Saturday April 16 after 10am until we close at 4pm. Preorders close Tuesday, April 12.

In store, find our spring specialty drink menu to put (dare we say) a spring in your step. The honey lavender latte has been said to taste “like walking into a garden”, and the maple matcha latte is a soothing hug in a cup. There’s more in store, and we look forward to seeing you there!
